Surprisingly, crafting chests before sending to recyclers was not better. Recycler shuffle remained best option of those tested.
Wood. Voiding it. Compared to carbon, it has the same fuel value. It has a recipe (wooden chest) that could be crafted into first. Also, it recycles quicker than carbon (0.03 seconds vs 0.06).
All those factors trip it over into interesting enough territory.
Test was performed by benchmarking the saves using the inbuilt Factorio benchmark. Each save was tested 5 times for 1000 ticks a piece

Simple recycler shuffle was best, beating out crafting chests first.
The shorter craft cycle time on wood appeared to have a benefit over the carbon performance found in test-000067.
Wood performed ~identically to carbon when used in a heating tower - expected because they have the same fuel value.
